Our Torchliters are vetted freelance digital marketing experts that power the Torchlite Marketplace. They come from a variety of backgrounds and are experts in all areas of digital marketing – from SEO and copywriting to web design and development. Earlier this month, we got to know web developer, Aric Harris.
Today, we’re talking with content expert and strategic lead, Susan Nixon.
What’s your role as a Torchliter and which clients do you work with?
Strategic lead. Right now I’m working solely with Salesforce Marketing Cloud on content development. We have a talented trio of Torchlite writers that round out my team. I’m balancing this with several projects I manage for clients outside of Torchlite.
Where do you live and what’s your favorite part about your hometown?
My husband and I moved to Noblesville last spring (we’re a blended family with six kids). We love our home and the kid-friendly feel of this neighborhood plus proximity to a great city park. Bonus – I live across the street from another Torchliter!
What do you like to do in your free time?
Play tennis. Travel. Read. Cook with my husband. Spend time with friends and family. Watch our kids’ various sports teams. I’m an aunt for the first time and can’t get enough of my nephew – I try to kiss him at least once a week for good measure.
What was the last trip you took?
We just spent a week in Costa Rica – split between Arenal and Manuel Antonio. We loved the entire experience (apart from the rains from Hurricane Otto).
What was the last book you read?
I dipped back into some fiction on our latest trip and read Commonwealth. Complex family story that I really enjoyed.
If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?
My grandparents. As a kid, you never appreciate them as much as you should, and I would love one more chance to talk with each of them.
What’s one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?
I grew up in Bloomington so my brush with fame there was babysitting for the family of John Mellencamp’s former drummer, Kenny Aronoff. And for NFL QB Rex Grossman.
How did you get into freelancing?
I was in a traditional agency prior; I always thought once I left I would re-enter the 8-5 world and I did work toward that end. During that search, I gained momentum with my own business, gaining a clearer picture of my strengths and finding a new confidence in setting the course for myself and my clients.
What is your typical day like?
When our kids are here, it’s an early rise to get people motivated and off to school. I tend to come right back to the home office then and hunker down for the day – coffee in hand. I like to make my way through emails first and then dive into the bigger work at hand.
How do you stay up-to-date on the latest digital marketing trends?
I was so fortunate to work with some brilliant digital and brand minds during my agency days, and I continually look back on that as a source of inspiration. I’ve also come to rely on Moz.com and Kissmetrics.com.
What’s your favorite part about working with Torchlite?
It’s absolutely the people. From the internal team to our Torchliters, it’s been a really positive, reaffirming experience.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, Susan!
