Torchliters are digital marketing experts who deliver high-quality work to our customers. Marketing is their passion and their livelihood. So yeah, they’re pretty darn good at what they do.
Ashley Watters is passionate about writing and helping her clients communicate their unique market offerings. We sat down to learn a little more about her day-to-day life as a content marketer.
What’s your role as a Torchliter?
I work in content creation. With Torchlite, I mostly blog. When I initially joined the Torchliter network, I was blogging for the Torchlite blog. Now, I write for Defenders.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Free time sounds like an interesting concept. Tell me more.
I love to read, travel, and spend time with my family. I mostly work to support my travel addiction. I like exciting fiction, dystopian literature, great stories with plot twists, that kind of stuff. Books that are simply enjoyable.
Where do you live and what’s your favorite part about your hometown?
I live in Indy. However, I am originally from Bloomington, IN. I love the culture in Bloomington. There’s a quirky downtown and always lots of people. It’s a college town, so there’s a diverse population and lots to do. It’s a small town with a big city feel.
What was the last trip you took?
I went to Denver two months ago. We stayed in a cabin that was so far off the beaten path, we barely found it. The cabin had giant windows with a loft that overlooked Pike’s Peak. Each morning, I was privileged with an awe-inspiring view and some very rare quiet moments. It was secluded, it was rustic, and it required an obligatory week of unplugging (no service). It was phenomenal.
What was the last book you read?
I just finished the 5th Wave Trilogy. Dystopian future, lots of twists and turns. Kept me on my toes, I enjoyed it.
If you could have dinner with anyone (alive or dead) who would it be and why?
My dad. He passed away about five years ago. I missed a call from him two days before he died.
What’s one interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?
There’s a whole group of people who know me by a different name. I used to play roller derby and we used alternate monikers. It’s funny how people I haven’t seen for years will still use that name and they have no idea what my real name is.
Also, I did my student teaching in England. If it weren’t for a small twist of fate, I might still be teaching British teenagers the finer points of literature.
How did you get into freelancing?
It was completely by accident. I blundered into it unintentionally. I was looking to transition out of teaching. During my maternity leave, I did some editing from home. When it came time to go back to work, I was faced with unsavory daycare options and a job that I was becoming disillusioned with. So, I made the jump and decided to give freelancing a try. That was five years ago and here I am.
What does your typical day look like?
I’m an early riser by necessity, not choice. My son likes to wake up around 6 am. I make coffee and attack my inbox. I usually do some editing or writing for the first couple of hours while things are quiet. Around lunch time I generally take phone calls and deal with the business side of things. I have a double jogger and like to take my kiddos (daughter 4, son 2) for a jog, if time allows. After lunch, I hit writing hard and finish any outstanding deadlines for the day. I typically finish by sending emails about upcoming tasks. In between those tasks, there are sometimes park visits and play breaks.
How do you stay up-to-date on the latest digital marketing trends?
Networking. I like to hit up colleagues for suggestions. This opens up an organic conversation about real topics and I feel like I get genuine opinions this way.
What’s your favorite part about working with Torchlite?
I like the freedom and accessibility. Working with Torchlite gives me the opportunity to grow my professional life, while still having a personal one. In addition, I enjoy the free flow of information and that there are constantly opportunities for growth and learning.
